Into the Void: Facing 1800 Feet of Vertical Madness at Kokankada

If you had told me last Friday that I’d be hanging by a rope off a 1800 foot vertical cliff, I probably would have laughed and gone back to my coffee. But there I was, standing at the edge of the legendary Kokankada on Harishchandragad, looking at a drop so massive it felt like looking into another world.

The weekend started with a really smooth bus journey from the city. Honestly, after a long week of work, having a comfortable ride where you can just shut your eyes and wake up at the base village is a blessing. We reached Pachnai, and the air was already different: crisp, fresh, and full of that mountain magic.

What struck me immediately was the team from SL Adventures. I’ve been on a few treks, but these guys are on another level. You can see they aren't just doing a job; they genuinely love the mountains. Every leader was so supportive, and they weren't just checking the schedule, they were checking on us. I saw them double-checking the first aid kits and organizing the certified, world-class equipment with such focus that it actually made my pre-trek jitters disappear.

Then there’s Lahu Ughade. If you don’t know his story, the man is an actual Everesteer who used to sell lemon juice at Sinhagad Fort as a kid to help his family. Even with all those big achievements, he was right there with us at Kokankada. He didn't just stand back and give orders. He was personally leading the expedition, keeping a close eye on every single knot and every participant’s harness.

At one point, when I was standing right at the edge of that concave cliff, my legs started doing that weird "sewing machine" shake. Lahu noticed it instantly. He didn't just tell me to "be brave." He walked over, gave me a calm smile, and said something that totally shifted my mindset. His way of inspiring people isn't about being loud; it’s about making you believe you’re stronger than your fear. That moral boost was exactly what I needed to take that first step back into the void.

Rappelling down those 1800 feet in four stages is an experience I can't quite put into words. One moment you're on solid rock, and the next, because of the concave shape of the cliff, you’re just hanging in mid-air with the entire Konkan region spread out beneath your boots. It’s terrifying, but with the high-quality ropes and the team shouting encouragement from the top and bottom, you feel strangely safe.

And let’s talk about the food! After that much adrenaline, we were treated to quality local Maharashtrian food. There is nothing like hot, authentic village meals to make you feel at home after an extreme day. It was easily some of the best food I’ve had in a long time.

For those who want to show off a bit (and let’s be honest, who wouldn't?), SL Adventures offers a separate drone footage service. Seeing the video of myself as a tiny speck against that massive, ancient rock wall was incredible. It’s the perfect way to flaunt the experience on social media and show everyone what 1800 feet of sheer vertical drop actually looks like from the sky.

We ended the trek at Bailpada village, exhausted but feeling like giants. If you're looking for a weekend that changes how you see yourself, you need to get out there with Lahu and his team. It’s not just a trip; it’s a memory that’s going to stay with me forever.
