Kang-yatse 1 and 2 expedition 2025

Kang Yatse 1 & 2 Expedition –
Rising majestically at 6,400 meters (21,000 feet) above sea level, Kang Yatse 1 is the highest peak in the Markha Valley and is considered one of the most technically demanding climbs in Ladakh. With a summit success rate of approximately 60–70%, the ascent is highly dependent on weather conditions, making it a true test for experienced mountaineers aiming to push their limits in high-altitude alpine climbing.
Following our summit attempt on Kang Yatse 1, we will take a rest day at Base Camp before proceeding towards Kang Yatse 2 (6,250 meters / 20,500 feet) the next day. Unlike many Himalayan expeditions where trekkers reach Base Camp within the first couple of days, the approach to Kang Yatse spans over 50 kilometers, passing through five to six remote villages of the Markha Valley. This extended route allows climbers ample time for gradual acclimatization and adaptation to the harsh, high-altitude environment of Ladakh.
To ensure a safe and efficient ascent, a fixed rope section of approximately 500 meters will be set up prior to the climbing day. This stretch will require the use of ascenders (jumars) and other technical climbing techniques. Given the extreme nature of the climb, highly seasoned guides with extensive Himalayan experience will be required to lead the team to the summit.
Our ascent strategy will involve load ferries and rope-fixing operations at each new camp. The temperatures at these elevations can drop severely without warning, so it is imperative to bring high-quality mountaineering apparel and personal equipment. Additionally, since the final summit push involves negotiating steep ice crags, all climbers should have basic ice-climbing and jumaring proficiency, as inexperience in these techniques can slow the overall team’s progress.
Kang Yatse’s snow-capped summit remains permanently draped in ice, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Zanskar Range, the southeastern Himalayan stretches, and countless other snow-clad peaks. More than just a climb, this expedition is an immense physical and mental challenge, providing an opportunity to push beyond personal limits and experience one of the most rewarding ascents in the Indian Himalayas.
For those seeking to step beyond their comfort zone and take on the ultimate Himalayan challenge, Kang Yatse 1 & 2 provide an unparalleled adventure. As your trusted expedition partners in Ladakh, we are committed to ensuring your journey is both memorable and seamlessly executed, with the highest standards of safety and professionalism throughout.

Day-to-Day Programs
01 : Arrival in Leh (3,500m)
Upon arrival at Bakula Rinpoche Airport in Leh, you will be greeted by our expedition team and transferred to your designated guesthouse. The first day is reserved for complete acclimatization, allowing your body to adjust to the high-altitude conditions of Ladakh. Hydration and rest are crucial at this stage to prevent altitude sickness. Light walks around the guesthouse vicinity are recommended. Overnight stay in Leh.
02 : Acclimatization Trek Around Leh (3,500m - 3,700m)
A light trek within Leh town is planned to facilitate further acclimatization. The itinerary includes a visit to Shanti Stupa, an iconic structure built in 1999 symbolizing peace and offering panoramic views of southern Leh. We then ascend to Namgyal Tsemo Monastery (built in the 15th century by King Tashi Namgyal), which provides an excellent vantage point overlooking the Zanskar Range and the Stok-Kangri peak (6,153m). A short walk through the alleys of Leh town follows, concluding at a local restaurant for lunch. The evening is free for market exploration. Overnight stay in Leh.
03 : Summit Attempt of Lamdon Peak (4,100m)
An early start at 9:00 AM ensures we ascend before the sun’s intensity peaks. The trek to Lamdon Peak is a moderate 3-hour round trip, offering an excellent opportunity to test gear and physical preparedness. At the summit, we enjoy a refreshing cup of tea while taking in breathtaking views. After descending, the afternoon is free for leisure and final gear checks. Overnight stay in Leh.
04 : Leh to Markha (3,400m - 3,800m, 8-9 hours)
We depart Leh by vehicle at 8:00 AM for a 2.5-hour scenic drive to Chilling. Beyond the Chilling Bridge, the Markha Valley is protected as a wildlife sanctuary, restricting commercial vehicles. We commence our trek from the bridge, following a well-defined trail through Sku village and Sara before reaching Markha village. The 8-9 hour trek follows the Markha River through diverse landscapes, including pastures and barren cliffs. Arriving in Markha by late afternoon, we set up camp and explore the surrounding terrain. Overnight at Markha campsite.
05 : Trek from Markha to Hangkar (4,000m, 5 hours)
We begin with a short trek to Yensa Monastery, belonging to the Drukpa lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. Continuing along the trail, we pass Umlung village before reaching Hangkar, the highest inhabited settlement in Markha Valley. En route, we gain our first clear view of Kang Yatse II (6,250m) and the approach route to its base camp. Overnight at Hangkar campsite.
06 : Hangkar to Kang Yatse I Base Camp (5,100m, 5-6 hours)
A gradual ascent along well-trodden paths brings us to a small glacial pond offering stunning views of Nimaling and the Kongmaru La pass (5,130m). After another hour of trekking, we arrive at Kang Yatse I Base Camp (5,100m). The remainder of the day is spent resting, hydrating, and preparing for the ascent. Overnight at base camp.
07: Buffer/Rest Day at Base Camp
A crucial acclimatization and preparation day before the summit push. Guides will fix ropes while climbers hydrate, perform breathing exercises, and conduct final gear checks. Overnight at base camp.
08 : Kang Yatse I Base Camp to Advanced Camp (5,500m, 4 hours)
A short but critical climb, gaining approximately 400m in altitude. The terrain is snow-covered with gradual inclines. After establishing camp, climbers rest in preparation for the following day’s climb. Overnight at Advanced Camp.
09 : buffer day
10 : Advanced Camp to Summit Camp (5,900m, 4-5 hours)
A steep ascent through deep snow leads us to Summit Camp, positioned at an awe-inspiring height with views of Kang Yatse I glaciers and crevasses. Guides conduct rope-fixing and load ferrying in preparation for the final summit attempt. Overnight at Summit Camp.
11 : Kang Yatse I Summit Push (6,400m, 6-7 hours)
A pre-dawn departure at 3:00 AM ensures stable snow conditions. The ascent involves technical ice climbing and navigating crevasses before reaching the summit. The summit rewards climbers with an unparalleled panoramic view of the Zanskar and Himalayan ranges. After a brief time at the summit, we carefully descend to Advanced Camp. Overnight at Advanced Camp.
12 : Descent to Base Camp & Celebration
A relaxed descent to base camp is followed by a celebratory dinner marking the successful summit. Team members reflect on the expedition while guides retrieve fixed ropes from higher camps. Overnight at Base Camp.
13 : Rest/Reserve Day at Base Camp
A contingency day reserved for unforeseen circumstances or additional rest. Overnight at Base Camp.
14 : Summit Attempt of Kang Yatse II (6,250m, 10-11 hours)
An early start (1:00 AM) is necessary for this technically demanding ascent, involving steep snow sections and exposed ridges. The summit offers one of the most picturesque views in Ladakh. After reaching the top, we descend safely to Base Camp. Overnight at Base Camp.
15: Base Camp to Leh via Kongmaru La (5,130m)
A long descent over 2-3 hours to Kongmaru La provides a final high-altitude challenge. From the pass, we descend to Shang Sumdo, where vehicles await for transport back to Leh. Overnight in Leh.
